Ethical EMDR Preparation:

Recognizing When Clients Need More Support Before Trauma Processing

February 26, 2026
5:30pm - 6:00pm Charcuterie Social
6:00pm - 7:30pm CE Event (AZ Time)

This continuing education course explores ethical and clinical considerations related to EMDR preparation and trauma readiness. Many clinicians encounter clients who are highly motivated for trauma processing yet struggle with emotional regulation, affect tolerance, or nervous system instability that interferes with safe and effective EMDR work. Participants will review common clinical presentations that indicate a client may require additional stabilization or support prior to engaging in trauma processing. The training will examine the distinction between standard EMDR preparation and situations in which the intensity or frequency of support needed exceeds what can be provided in weekly outpatient therapy alone. Ethical decision making will be emphasized, including informed consent, non-maleficence, scope of competence, and appropriate use of referrals. The course will also address how to discuss pacing and additional support recommendations with clients while maintaining trust, collaboration, and continuity of care. This training is designed to support clinicians in making thoughtful, ethical decisions that enhance client safety and improve outcomes in trauma focused treatment.

About this training

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify clinical indicators that suggest a client may not yet have sufficient emotional regulation or nervous system capacity to engage safely in EMDR trauma processing.Identify religious paradigms that might contribute to sexual shame creating body/value conflict
  • Describe ethical responsibilities related to pacing trauma focused work, including differentiating between standard EMDR preparation and situations where extended or more intensive support may be indicated based on client safety, scope of practice, and clinical competence.
  • Apply ethical decision making frameworks to determine when additional supports such as group based skill building or intensive outpatient services may enhance treatment outcomes and communicate these recommendations in a way that preserves the therapeutic alliance and continuity of care.
